This year's Genting competition has a total of 28 registered teams, an increase from the 22 registered teams in the previous edition in 2006. This is particularly due to the fact that Genting is now allowing 3 teams from each country instead of the usual 2. Countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia are capitalising on this while Malaysia will have a total of 4 teams, one of them being in by virtue of being the defending champions.
The 4 sided jong lay out will also be making it's first appearance in the world championships, after it's successful implementation in the 13th Malaysian National Lion Dance Championship last November. Link
This being a whole new playground for most of the teams, it'll be interesting to see if Kun Seng Keng Team D will be able to retain their Genting world title. During the last Malaysian nationals which made use of this 4 sided jong format, they lost to Goh Chor by a narrow margin of 0.01 marks, so it's obvious that the title this time will be wide open for the contesting teams.
Which leads on to another matter: rumours have it that the main Goh Chor team are no longer dancing as a pair. Now I'm not sure if there's any meat to this allegation, but if it is indeed true, we will be missing one of the most interesting and unique teams we've come to see in recent times. Their 2nd rank pair is not to be taken lightly though, as they took the champion crown in a national competition in March, edging Hok Seng and the junior dancers of KSK.
Maha Bodhi from Tawau, Malaysia is another uprising team which placed 3rd in the last Malaysian nationals. They'll be looking to make an impact in their first appearance in the world championships, while the small boys of KSK Team E will also be a force to reckon with based on their recent performances. They placed 2nd behind their seniors from Team D at a Hong Kong competition in June.
China will have 2 teams from the Guangxi province, where 2004 co-champions Tengxian hails from. We shall see if the 2 are as good, if not better, then the Tengxian team. Be prepared for some crazy leaps and jumps from the China teams as usual.
Hong Kong will also have a formidable line up. Cheung Keung needs no introduction, having been in the world championships over the past few editions dating back to 1998. Hong Tuck, or better known as Fiery Dragon to the English speaking world, has also won the hearts of many with their leaping prowesses. Wong Kwok Cheung is the current Hong Kong national champions (based on what I was roughly told..correct me if I'm wrong on this) and should be an entertaining watch.
Indonesia has the same 3 teams that were sent for the invitational world title held in Genting last year. Kong Ha Hong had a good placing in that competition and will look to improve on that, while Tarakan is out to make ammends for missing the finals in the invitationals due to mistakes in the preliminary rounds. They had earlier done very well in the previous world title in 2006. Dragon Phoenix was also a finalist in the invitational and is likely to put up a better showing this time around.Phoenix and Dragon team of Indonesia is one team that advancedto the final round of Indonesia 3 team. With the acquisition of 9:04 toget the 6th place.
Singapore's 3 teams is also looking good. Nam Sieng has been making waves both nationally and internationally, winning many awards and titles. It'll be interesting to see how they adapt to the fixed jong format, after having had to pull out from the invitational world championship last year. Wei Yong is making their first appearance in Genting and also seems to be an up and rising force. Yi Wei has been around for the past few championships and has consistently been in the finals.
Vietnam had a very good performance during the last championship and will definitely be making a strong push for the title in this year's edition. Their balancing on ball move will definitely be missed by the audience. White Crane from USA has also been a strong force in recent competitions and even placed 4th in the invitational last year. If they've continued with their vast progress, it wouldn't be a suprise to see them break into a top 3 finish this time around.
Brunei and Taipei have 2 teams each in the fray. They haven't really been putting up much of a show in the past few editions, but who knows what will happen this time around. A little more hard work and effort and wonders can happen.
Yi Dao from UK is back to Genting after skipping the last few editions. We shall see if they can contend for the Western Title, along with the 2 teams from Australia. We can only hope that the Australian teams can avoid injury this time, as last minute injuries hampered Khuan Yee and Chinese Youth League in the previous edition.
Macau Hong Vai was a team that impressed me in 2006, and I'm looking forward to see them perform again. Thailand realistically doesn't have much of a chance to contend for the title based on past showings, but it's good exposure for the kids of the team, as they usually use a whole bunch of kids to perform. To be a true champion is to work hard and give the best that you can, not just by winning titles. As long as everyone works hard and gives their level best, they're already champions.
